Covet Dispels Bad Luck at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix
It had been a long time since I had been at the Crescent Ballroom, which lays smack dab in the middle of the college town in Phoenix. Despite the construction littering the streets of downtown, people were already lined up as early as 2 hours before they opened the doors. Some adorned Covet shirts giddy with excitement to see the band again, some were just there for a good time.
The first act went on right around 7:15pm, Pablo Alto hyped the crowd up with slow build techno rock, they were definitely there for a good time and they gave those vibes right back to the crowd. Around 8:00pm the second act, Alejandro Aranda AKA Scarypoolparty , came on adorning a white robe and an acoustic guitar, the stage was only lit by a single bulb. I can only describe the performative art that I witness as haunting, a seance in a sense. The whole venue was in somewhat of a trance, watching the intricate playing and sound loop. Scarypoolparty’s set was like watching a movie play out, a rocky start, a long journey, a love story, a break up and a redemption arc. The last song Alejandro addressed the crowd and spoke about the songs he played and what they mean to him.
Covet stepped onto the stage about 9:00pm that night, lead guitarist Yvette Young, spoke to the crowd saying that they last time they had played the Ballroom they ‘were going to play the best show of their lives’ then she went onto describe all the technical difficulties that ended up happening that night, looking around the crowd several heads nodded and laughter sprinkled throughout the crowd fans that had attend that same concert the night of the misfortunes. Nonetheless, Covet kicks off their first song and hypes the crowd right back. The night went off without a hitch which ended Covet’s spell of bad luck at the Ballroom, the crowd that was a mix of old fans and new fans went through an experience like no other.
