Debut Youthful Indie/Emo Track ‘Grad Day’ Released by Customer Service
Hailing from Nova Scotia, Customer Service started playing shows in spring of 2022. Although they have yet to put out an official album release, they’ve garnered a respectable following through their high energy performances and emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility.
On Jan. 19, Customer Service hit the first of many milestones in their career by releasing the first single of their debut EP, titled ‘Live More Forever.’
The song, ‘Grad Day,’ starts slow with an open and rhythmic guitar, underlying singer Matt Cheverie’s tender and vulnerable lyrics.
Lines like “It’s sad that I don’t even know what I’m upset about,” in the intro of the song perfectly conveys the kind of confusion and frustration that comes along with the transition from youth to adulthood.
Drummer Owen Harris, with masterful timing, comes into the pre-chorus with an open and airy drum beat that perfectly compliments the rest of the instrumentation. Following the pre-chorus the track picks up in tempo and volume, opening up to an explosive and emotional chorus.
Following the theme of ‘growing up,’ the chorus ends with a cynical and sarcastic line, “so congratulations on your graduation,” and as the backing instrumentation drops out Cheverie belts out the emotional lyric, “I hope your family’s proud,” giving the chorus an angsty, yet still tender feel.
The music video for the song keeps the theme, with scenes depicting driving around with your friends, working a not-so-exciting kitchen job and ends with the band playing a house party.
The honesty and emotion that was poured into this track is clear, and sets a good precedent for the rest of their career. Customer Service’s debut EP ‘Live More Forever’ is scheduled for release on Feb. 23.
