Einar Selvik (Wardruna) & Chelsea Wolfe: In-Depth Conversation Ahead of Their Oct. 3 Red Rocks Performance
Frank Godla from Metal Injection recently sat with Einar Selvik of Wardruna and solo artist Chelsea Wolfe in Oslo, NO to discuss their upcoming performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on October 3rd. During the more than 40-minute video, which can be viewed on the official Wardruna YouTube channel, the pair revealed to Godla how they are preparing for the highly anticipated show. The pair also discussed their songwriting process and shared admiration for each other’s work.
“I’m a sucker for melody, for visual music. The first time I experienced Chelsea’s music was live, at Hellfest. I could hear elements of things that I do in my music, or how I like to paint the picture. It has this Nordic feel to it actually. I like artists who aren’t afraid to follow the path they are on.”
- said Selvik
Wolfe added that Wardruna and herself share common ground in their approach to songwriting, performance, and choice of themes in their work.
“Even though our music is very different, and comes from different worlds, there is some crossover. Both of us bring a sense of theater and spirituality to our live show. I love the idea of bringing history into the modern world in a totally fresh way like Wardruna does.”
- said Wolfe
Wardruna’s interest in history extends to their choice of venue for their performances. In the past, they have played at the world heritage site Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Acropolis in Athens, the Ancient Theater in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and Castle Devin in Bratislava, Slovakia. The upcoming show at Red Rocks, known for its awe-inspiring natural beauty, displays Wardruna’s love of nature. Wardruna chose these locations to create memorable experiences for their fans and the band, fostering a deeper connection with themselves and their environment.
Outside of Wardruna, Einar Selvik has composed music for television and video games including productions such as Vikings and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. An expert on traditional Scandinavian art and culture, Selvik teaches and lectures on Old Norse literature, music, and philosophy. Chelsea Wolfe is a successful solo artist who combines gothic rock and doom metal with folk music. Wolfe has released seven studio albums and collaborated with Tyler Bates on the X soundtrack.
The Red Rock Amphitheatre performance will be Wardruna’s only North American performance. Tickets available here.
