FOX MEDICINE Sinks Fangs Deep on "Rattlesnake Valentine" Ahead of Tour
Fox Medicine, the Portland, Oregon-based experimental rock band that often defies description has gone back to their lo-fi roots with the latest single, “Rattlesnake Valentine.”
The noise-rockers are comfortable crossing through genres to create infectious new sounds. Fox Medicine’s previous releases showed influences from a diverse range of bands and genres. The music of Fox Medicine ranges in sound from the grunge rock of The Melvins, the original no-wave era Sonic Youth, Black Sabbath-influenced doom metal, and the punky alt-rock of Babes in Toyland. Fox Medicine often viewed themselves as American proponents of the artcore scene that developed in Japan.
It was after the 2023 release of their EP DOOM CANDY that Fox Medicine decided to return to the studio to experiment with analog recording equipment. Fox Medicine wanted to replicate the earlier, raw recordings that the band produced before they polished their sound for their first two studio albums. The result is the single, “Rattlesnake Valentine” which paradoxically harkens back to the gritty style of early Norwegian Black Metal while embracing the girly aesthetic of The Powerpuff Girls. Fox Medicine calls the fresh style they created Bubblegum Doom.
"We think of this song as a B-side to DOOM CANDY, because it's more aggressive and raw, but definitely belongs in the same candy shop," said bandleader Neezy Dynamite.
Since forming in 2016 Fox Medicine has for most of that time been a duo with Neezy Dynamite on guitar and vocals and Vanny Keeps on drums, synthesizer, and vocals. Fox Medicine has recently expanded to be a trio with the addition of Sir Dog Lord on bass.
“I previously used some dirty tricks to fake a bass on stage, but adding a real bass player is getting more headbanging and Elaine Benes type of dancing results in the front row that we’ve always wanted,” explained Neezy.
Now with a fuller sound, Fox Medicine is hitting the road on an 11-date tour. The Rattlesnake Valentine tour will begin in Oregon and extend throughout California. The band describes the tour as “centered around the band’s love for West Coast skateparks and rock and roll playgrounds.”
"Rattlesnake Valentine" is available on all streaming platforms. A special Valentine's Day card bundle will be sold exclusively during their tour and includes a download code, stickers, and a button.
