Haviah Mighty Cries Crystals Onto the Lower East Side - 11.1.23

Photography By Kiera Kalleberg

Ringing in November and kicking off the first night of a short tour, Canadian rapper Haviah Mighty and her DJ MsLeeDing stopped by the Mercury Lounge to bring the party to a captivated crowd. Celebrating the recent release of her latest album, Crying Crystals, Mighty told stories through her lyrics about love, heartbreak, injustice, and fighting on when the odds are stacked against you. Blending rap, hip hop, and afrobeat, Mighty and MsLeeDing had the room eating straight from their hands, and dancing in tequlia soaked shoes. Also visiting 2022’s Stock Exchange - which won the Juno Award for Rap Album of the Year - Mighty introduced Dai Burger, who joined her in performing So So.

This was not Mighty’s first time gracing a stage in New York City, but it was her first time producing her own show in the boroughs with supporting acts Rodney Chrome and Perry Maysun rounding out the bill, roughly 500 miles south of her hometowns of Toronto and Brampton, Ontario. Her work is breaking ground and making history everywhere she goes - the Polaris Prize she won in 2019 for 13th Floor holds proof - and she’s only just heating up.

Catch Haviah Mighty’s final shows of 2023:

November 5th - The Masquerade, Atlanta, GA

November 7th - Schubas Tavern, Chicago, IL

November 9th - Marquee Ballroom, Halifax, NS

Photographer

I am a photographer based in New York City. I primarily capture live music, though I also love documenting cities and events. I look for beauty in the details. I studied at the School of Visual Arts for two years before leaving to pursue other education and received a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies from Hunter College in 2016. I have been published in numerous outlets such as Stencil, Jersey Beat, and Alternative Press. I also had a photograph featured in a national Ernie Ball campaign. I feel most at home when I'm at a concert and have been enjoying live music since I was 8 years old - with no plans to stop any time soon.
