Hayley and the Crushers' Play Halfsies Between Grit and Glitz with New Single “Unsubscribe”

Hayley and the Crushers are a band that has played everywhere from backyard parties in Southern California to gritty dive bars in Detroit. Their latest single “Unsubscribe” is a homage to the varied musical scenes that have been an inspiration to them.

“’Unsubscribe’ is directly connected to our feelings about creative expression and underground music scenes. Creative environments and communities are always fraught with this tension of new and old, reverence for the past, and the courage to push forward. At some point, the bubble bursts, and things start changing. Maybe that's neither a good nor bad thing. But it’s always rich territory!”

- said frontwoman/guitarist Hayley Cain

“Unsubscribe” is the first track to be released from the upcoming EP Unsubscribe from the Underground. The EP is a follow-up to the band’s 2022 album, Modern Adult Kicks. Hayley and the Crushers have gone for an even rawer sound on the upcoming EP giving their trademark pop-oriented punk rock an even grittier sound.

Married couple Hayley Crusher Cain and bassist Dr. Cain ESQ are the founders and core members of Hayley and the Crushers. The pair goes back and forth from San Luis Obispo, CA and Detroit, MI. The couple left sunny California for the rock city that is Detroit to immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant music scene. The contrast of the two vastly different worlds flavors the music of Hayley and the Crushers.

Hayley and the Crushers play what they call “poolside glitter trash." While embracing glamor and sensation, Hayley and the Crushers explore the darkside of La La Land. This dichotomy was even present in the recording of Unsubscribe from the Underground

“We recorded half of our new songs in our lead guitarist's Detroit basement and the other half at Josie Cotton's beautiful LA Kitten Robot studio. I think that says a lot right there. In that way, they hold some grit and some glitz, never really teetering to one side more than the other. As a band, I think that’s where we feel most at home.”

Seeing both sides of life, the light and the dark, has taught Hayley and the Crusher to not limit themselves to just one category. This attitude influenced the themes of the new EP. The five tracks on Unsubscribe from the Underground show a diverse range including a pop-punk anthem, a 60s girl-group style ballad, and even a cover of a Juice Newton country song.

“(Unsubscribe from the Underground is an) ode to being true to yourself within any specific music or social scene. I love the fact that these new sonic systems of categorization are breaking up and new artists are a lot more free to play with styles, buck the status quo, and make their own weird genres. Rock and roll has been dead for a long time, and good riddance! We don't need another rock band. The world won't be saved by a bunch of cool dudes with guitars.”

The new single “Unsubscribe” is out now. Hayley and the Crushers are set to drop their upcoming EP Unsubscribe from the Underground on all platforms via Kitten Robot Records on September 10, 2024.
