Hey, Chels Release EP ‘Brick Roads’

Hey, Chels has announced the release of a new EP Brick Roads on Paper Street Cuts. The San Diego-based band has been creating pop-infused indie rock since first debuting in 2018 with their self-titled album. This new EP follows their well-regarded sophomore album Everything Goes. With Brick Roads Hey, Chels seeks to continue creating the melodic rock that the band has come to be known for.

The band is made of talented musicians who are well experienced in the Southern California music scene. On vocals and electric piano is Jacque Mendez previously from New Way On. The drummer is Stephanie Presz from punk band the Newports. Guitarist Kevin White played for the groups Squarecrow and Londons Falling before joining Hey, Chels. Playing bass is Ricky Schmidt formerly of the bands Western Settings and Caskitt.

Together the group has created a signature sound that combines dreamlike melodies with drumbeats that results in an extremely danceable type of indie pop. Hey, Chels has been known for their DIY ethic in producing music and the production of Brick Roads saw the group seclude themselves in the desert to focus on recording. Shacking up in an Airbnb in Bombay, CA off the coast of the Salton Sea, the group recorded six songs for the album.

The track listing includes four original songs. The other two tracks are Spanish language versions of a couple of the original songs on the album. The complete song list is as follows:

  1. Daisy

  2. Disaster

  3. Escape

  4. Gold

  5. Daisy (En Español)

  6. Escape (En Español)

The first single off Brick Roads is the song “Disaster.” As Jacque Mendez explains, the song deals with what life throws your way.

This song is about the frustrations of doing everything in life the way you were supposed to have, the way you were told to, yet having very little to show for it,” said Mendez. “That realization leaves you wondering if this is really it. And if that’s the case and if this is all we’ve got, we might as well make the best of it in any way that makes us happy. Whether were failing, drowning, waiting, we might as well put on one hell of a show in the meantime.”
