HOLY WARS New EP "Cult Classic" Out Now + Drop Provocative Music Video For Title Track
Yesterday November 10th, HOLY WARS has finally dropped their brand new 6-track EP Cult Classic via Pale Chord/Rise Records and to celebrate they released the title track music video. The six-track juggernaut is a daring escapade that weaves through the realms of sound and psyche, marrying the gritty essence of modern rock and cyber punk with a touch of nu metal and pop.
Meanwhile, the title track music video takes you down a road of nostalgia for anyone born before 2000 with call backs to some of the greatest cult classic films such as Pulp Fiction (Directed by Quentin Tarantino, 1994) and From Dusk ‘Till Dawn (Directed by Robert Rodriguez, 1996). To see the recreation of Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) dancing in Pulp Fiction to seeing a recreation of Santanico Pandemonium (Salma Hayek) most infamous snake charmer dance while placing her foot into Richie Gecko (Quentin Tarantino) mouth while pouring alcohol down her leg was amazing to see.
The "Cult Classic" EP builds on HOLY WARS' growing legacy of esoteric sonic shape-shifting and marks another defiant stride in the band's march towards domination of the alternative soundscape. The record furthers the themes established by previously released singles “Deus Ex Machina” and "BODY//TEMPLE" - paying homage to the cult horror classics but with a twist: the true terror resides not in external monsters, but within—the God of the machine, the mind itself. Meticulously stitched together by Kat Leon’s razor sharp vocal prowess, her bitingly confrontational-yet-thought provoking lyrics and Nick Perez's genius production and genre-transcending guitar work, the EP plunges the listener into a narrative that is as much a critique of contemporary culture, the ego and the mind as it is a celebration of rebellious musical innovation.
“Making this EP was a fun and intrusive experience. I wanted to pose the question of what if the horror aka ‘the monster’ was actually inside us? In most thrillers, the monster is an external enemy but in this body of music, I really wanted to lean into the internal enemy but also acknowledging how this internal enemy is influenced by our external world and what we are made to feel about ourselves and about others. ‘Cult Classic’ is the climax track revealing the true enemy - the unattainable ideology of what it takes to thrive in a society that is holding each individual under its thumb. I hope this EP and every song displaying the internal struggle of the self, empowers the listener and allows them to have the freedom to unplug and let go of the ever powerful ego.”
“Cult Classic is an uptempo ripper with visual lyrics revealing a horror lying underneath our society. Where the need for fame, influence, and the ‘American Dream’ changes us in ways with moral shapeshifting and greed is insatiable. In the lyric ‘Suited up cannibals… we came to feed,’ this highlights the dog-eat-dog survivalism of capitalism and the justifications we tell ourselves in order to sleep at night. Sonically we really enjoyed taking turns with this track with a drum and bass intro straight into a heavy riff. This one raises the heart rate with twists and turns and doesn’t let go until the last second,”
