Kitty Coen Taps Into Western Witch Rock with Double Single Release "cadillac" and "el paso"
Nashville-based alt-pop artist Kitty Coen has just released not one, but two new singles. The tracks, “cadillac” and “el paso” are slices of Southern Gothic
The song "cadillac" is a dark and brooding track with a heavy baseline and features Coen singing in a deep and sultry way. Coen was influenced by cinema, particularly the films of Quentin Tarantino and the Spaghetti Western genre. Coen uses dramatic language in describing the meaning of “cadillac.”
“(“cadillac” is a) metaphorical dance with the devil on a fateful night in a desolate West Texas saloon,” said Coen.
The second track, “el paso," is an autobiographical ballad that deals with the pain and turmoil that addiction inflicts on both the user and the people close to them. Coen’s experiences living in West Texas and dealing with a partner’s drug problems.
"(“el paso” is) a true story about love and loss in my own life,” said Coen. “In my opinion, being in love with an addict is one of the hardest things a person can go through.”
The release of the singles, “cadillac,” and “el paso” are the first recordings from Kitty Coen since last autumn. September 2023 saw the release of the 2000s pop-punk-influenced single “unfollow me.” That following October Coen dropped the track “everything is a mess,” a 90’s alt-rock guitar-driven song.
Kitty Coen has been standing out in the indie music scene with her hypnotic blend of alternative rock and pop music that she refers to as “Western witch rock.” Inspiration for Coen’s powerful vocal style is drawn from singers like Lana Del Rey, Stevie Nicks, and Miley Cyrus. Coen also cites country music performers Noah Cyrus and Kacey Musgraves as influences.
"I've always been a Bluegrass girl at heart even if I've been fighting it my whole life,” admitted Coen.
