NFL Star Darren Waller Releases New Music Video, Who Knew (Her Perspective)
Atlanta-raised Darren Waller, a tight end for the New York Giants, continues to make his mark in music with the release of a music video for his latest single, “Who Knew (Her Perspective).” Produced by Fowler, the song seamlessly blends elements of rock, R&B, and hip-hop, offering a fresh perspective from the former NFL Pro Bowler on his past relationships.
Changing lives seems to be a natural gift for NFL player and artist Darren Waller, inspired by his great-grandfather jazz pianist Fats Waller to pursue his musical passion. Raised in Atlanta and originally from Landover, MD, Waller has called numerous places home, with his current residence in Las Vegas. The 9-year NFL veteran and 2020 Pro Bowl selection has always been a student of music, inspired by all genres, leading to his authentic feel. He credits Jay-Z, Ludacris, and Coldplay as some of his biggest musical influences, beginning his music journey in the same year as the start of his NFL career in 2015. Since then, he’s achieved several musical accolades including multiple placements on the Madden 2024 NFL Official Soundtrack released by Interscope Records and collaborations with many prominent artists.
Personal experiences, combined with the desire to inspire has fostered a strong internal love for music and the drive to create it. His primary objective is to motivate and provide listeners with the confidence to navigate everyday life and its obstacles, drawing from his own experiences of facing and conquering many challenges. Waller's journey to sobriety has been a significant part of his story. He has been open about his struggles and now serves as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges. Waller founded the Darren Waller Foundation, which focuses on providing support and resources to individuals and families affected by addiction.
Waller explains, “The song is written from the perspective of past relationship partners. It sounds like I’m getting my heart broken, but I really wrote it from the perspective of women who have tried to love me. I’ve struggled with intimacy in romantic relationships my whole life, and I recognize the toll it has taken on the lovers I’ve been close to. Essentially, I’m telling myself, from the damage I’ve done, that it’s imperative for me to heal the wounds in my life I’ve been avoiding by seeking relationships."
He continues, “The video finds me walking in ‘her’ shoes—begging the partner to heal, expressing pain and frustration, ultimately getting hurt in the end. As the song is an attempt to see things from the woman’s perspective, the video is an extension of that, ending with me being alone and wondering why they wounded me and left me there.”
The new song is a part of an upcoming full-length album set to be released later this year. Waller announced the project with the release of “Faith Test,” which centers on self-discovery and being tested in a world of instant gratification. Earmilk praised the track, noting its “sleek, rising vocal lines and crisp, infectious percussion that create a refreshing backdrop for Waller's poised, introspective verses." They added that it’s “a potent, heartfelt new release with true-to-life lyricism and a stripped-back, down-to-earth approach, along with an engaging, minimalistic new visual.”
