PEGZILLA Seeks Sincerity with "Eyes Of Phthonos"
Los Angeles-based band Pegzilla blend stoner rock with doom metal to creat seductive and hallucinatory music. With haunting vocals that compliment their psychedelic desert rock melodies, the music of Pegzilla transports listeners to other worlds, sometimes within themselves.
Pegzilla frontwoman Olivia Saperstein found herself drawn to the ancient Greek myth of Phthonos. The personification of jealousy and envy, Phthonos stirs intense emotions in mortals. Saperstein sees the ancient myth as an allegory for humans’ capacity to go to extremes when their security and fears lead to jealousy. Pegzilla’s latest single, “Eyes of Phthonos” deals with how jealousy can lead people to lie and pretend to be something they’re not.
Saperstein wants to make it clear that are conflicting sources of evil. The dark threat isn’t just come from within, they’re external forces at play as well.
The video for “Eyes of Phthonos” displays both the allure and danger of giving into the darker thoughts. Saperstein smiles at the camera coyly while brandishing a hatchet. A figure in a creepy clown mask haunts her and phantom hands grope her neck.
The spookiness continues with Pegzilla’s October 27th show at Permanent Records in Los Angeles. Joining Pezilla will be the Bay Area Black Sabbath tribute band Bobb Saggeth and Texan doom metal group Temptress.
