The Aquadolls "Burn Baby Burn"

The Aquadolls play guitar-driven femme-punk fury that they call “mermaid rock.” Through dedicated touring, The Aquadolls have developed a devoted fanbase. Fans of The Aquadolls now eagerly await the release of their third album, Charmed. Due to drop on June 2nd, the album named after the hit CW show in the 90s, deals with romance, heartbreak, and friendship all the while combining musical influences from 60s vocal harmony pop and 90s style metal crunchy guitar.

Charmed is the band’s first full-length album since The Dream and Deception, in 2018. The recording of that album saw the group solidify its line-up with founder and primary singer/songwriter Mellissa Brooks being joined by bassist Keilah Nina and drummer Jacqueline Proctor. Ahead of the album’s release, The Aquadolls have already released four singles. All the accompanying music videos were directed by Jenna Houchin who has been a longtime collaborator with The Aquadolls.

The first single off Charmed was the reverb-heavy “Beachy” which is reminiscent of 60s girl pop. The video has a very chill Southern California vibe showing the band cruising and playing music. The combination of synth and guitars creates a beautiful and joyful melody. It is an ideal summertime party song that suggests beach days with your closest friends.

“Sneaky” has a 90s alt-rock sound like Veruca Salt, and the Breeders. The song deals with the uncertainties in modern relationships. The lyrics detail the inner mind of a young woman whose late-night hook-ups with her lover lead her to question if she truly means anything more to him. The video depicts images of grrrrl rage like a burning dollhouse, a smashed cake, and ribbon-adorned knives. It is the band’s darkest video to date.

The song, “Burn Baby Burn” is about the importance of friendship and how girls can bond together to remind each other of their self-worth. The video for “Burn Baby Burn” matches the speed and energy of the song with shots of the band partying it up at a sleazy dive bar.

The ultimate girl gang anthem, this is a banger that’s all about finding comfort in your friends after being torn down. Learning the importance of not taking shit from anybody and letting that inner fire roar! It is also about finding solace in the meaningful connections you have with your sisterhood, rather than giving all your energy to toxic romantic partners. Our girl gang tells it as it is, no matter how fiery it comes off.

The latest single from The Aquadolls is the track titled, “Far Far Away” and its video depicts the far from glamorous world of working in the service industry to make ends meet.

’Far Far Away’ is a fairytale twist on the working class, discussing that the only person who can truly save you is yourself. Recorded by Chris Szcech, this up-tempo track features surfy guitar licks reminiscent of early Vampire Weekend and hand claps to ensure that anyone can clap and chant along to this modern self-love fairytale.
— said Melissa Brooks
‘Far Far Away’ is, A tune about struggling with work-life balance. The painful reality of getting trapped in the same 9-5 routine and feeling blocked or detached from personal growth, success, and/or love as a result. It’s also a tale of acceptance, sometimes you have  to pull yourself out of the dirt, and that’s okay!
— As Keilah Nina explains

The current line-up of The Aquadolls is their strongest yet. Since the new line-up, The Aquadolls have played with Kate Nash, Pennywise, and Jimmy Eat World. The Aquadolls appeared on various major festival lineups like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Warped Tour, and Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival. More recently, The Aquabats toured with Incubus and Sublime with Rome.

To promote Charmed The Aquadolls have gone back on the road. The group is currently headlining the North American Spring Fling tour. The coast-to-coast tour will see The Aquadolls make festival appearances at Shaky Knees and Ohana and an album release party on June 2nd at the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles.
