UMe Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Amy Winehouse's "Frank"
To honor the 20th anniversary of Amy Winehouse’s debut album Frank, UMe has released three EPs that were originally recorded when the groundbreaking singer was only in her teens. The EPs In My Bed, Take The Box, and F**k Me Pumps were originally released on vinyl, but for the first time they are available digitally.
The EPs include some bonus material. There are live versions of songs, as well as rare B-sides and alternate takes. The bonus material includes “Best Friend (Acoustic)”, “(There Is) No Greater Love – AOL Session”, and “Take the Box (The Headquarters Mix).”
Frank has also been re-released on a 2LP picture disc. Included in the physical release are the original cover on LP1 and two photographs shot by Valerie Phillips from the original album photo session in 2003 on LP2. Frank featured the singles “Take The Box,” “Stronger Than Me,” “F**k Me Pumps,” and “In My Bed.” The title Frank is a reference to Winehouse’s “frankness” in her lyrics as well as a tribute to her idol Frank Sinatra.
Frank was certified triple platinum in the UK and charted on the UK Jazz & Blues albums at #1 and peaked on the UK album charts at #3. Winehouse’s debut was critically acclaimed on both sides of the pond. Winehouse captivated listeners with her modern take on jazz and blues ballads. The album would be nominated at the 2004 BRIT Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Urban Act and made the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize Winehouse did receive the Ivo Novello Award for songwriting and composing.
The success of Frank was carried over to the 2006 album Back To Black. Winehouse would go on to win a record-breaking five Grammy Awards, including Record Of The Year and Song of The Year for Rehab. With over 30 million records sold worldwide, Winehouse became a superstar. Unfortunately, Winehouse would die in 2011, a tragic end to an immensely talented and innovative artist and performer.
The re-release of these albums isn’t the only way that Winehouse’s career will be celebrated this year. A biopic on Amy Winehouse directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson will be released later this Spring from Focus Features / Universal Pictures. The film Back to Black stars Marisa Abela (Industry) as Amy Winehouse. The supporting cast includes BAFTA-winning actor Jack O'Connell, Eddie Marsan, Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated Lesley Manville.
