Band VUKOVI released a new single, “SNO”, out of their new album “MY GOD HAS GOT A GUN”. On this day I’m going to give it a listen.

VUKOVI are a Scottish band that consists of Janine Shilstone (vocals) and Hamish Reilly (guitar). The band is a mixture of several music genres. The band is going to release a new album “MY GOD HAS GOT A GUN” on January 24th 2025.

The new single “SNO” has the band's characteristic style and I really like that. The track is about

the fragility and power of confronting your inner shadows

The music video for “SNO” is almost fully black and white, the only colorful scenes are visible when the breakdown hits. The lyrics sound like they are addressed to yourself which makes sense with Janine’s words.

  • Your music is a combination of various genres. Is it something that comes naturally, or is it an effect of experimenting in the studio?

Definitely a bit of both, we’re both very immersive people when it comes to soaking up inspiration from all aspects of life.

- Janine Shilstone

  • Is there any hidden meaning in your lyrics or music videos that you would like your fans to know?

That’s for them to find out. There’ll be clues ;)

- Janine Shilstone

  • What does the visual aspect of the music mean to you?

A great deal, we’ve always taken pride in creating strong colourful visuals to go with our music. I love playing with concepts that allows the listener to escape further when they listen.

- Janine Shilstone

  • You are releasing your new album “MY GOD HAS GOT A GUN” on January 24th next year. What makes this creation different from the rest?

It’s a different concept but there are some consistent themes throughout all records. This is the most honest/unapologetic record we’ve done. The process was pretty terrifying as I was going through some pretty intense therapy where I found my love for painting again. This album was my vessel to make peace with a lot of shadows.

- Janine Shilstone

  • What can your fans expect from the new album?

It’s definitely the most darkest and raucous record we’ve done. We’re always experimenting and pushing our own boundaries and just hope that it connects!

- Janine Shilstone

  • Can you tell our readers what the creative process looks like in your band from the idea to the final piece?

It varies, Hamish can send me a riff and we turn it into a song in 5 minutes or I make a song structure on logic then send it to Hamish to inject some big sexy riffs over it. We take a lot of inspiration from gaming  and movie soundtracks.

- Janine Shilstone

  • I think that everyone can hear the same style in your music from the beginning which makes you unique. How did it evolve over the years?

I think it evolved with us as we evolved as people. We had no idea what we were doing (still don’t) and didn’t really know ourselves. Vukovi has blossomed with us

- Janine Shilstone

  • You have an amazing connection with your fans. How does it influence your perspective on the music?

I try not think about it too much cos my brain spirals in disbelief at times. They keep us going and afloat, they are the most important aspect to what Vukovi is - Community and acceptance of who you are.

- Janine Shilstone

  • For some people it’s hard to cooperate when all of the band members have different ideas for the album/song. How long did it take you to work together so smoothly?

That’s been something we’ve connected over from the start and has definitely made it one of the most enjoyable aspects of being in a band.

- Janine Shilstone

  • Do you have your worst and best concert experience? Can you tell our readers about it?

I’m gonna tell you the show that was equally the best and worst. We were playing the mainstage at Resurrection festival in Spain, gigantic stage, thousands of people in a country we’d never played in before.

2nd song in the full generator cut off including my mic. Absolutely shit myself and realised I had about 5 seconds to do something.

I jumped on some guys shoulders, had a beer in hand and got the full crowd to sing “Oasis, Wonderwall” (I panicked and that was the first song that popped into my head).

The power was out for 6 minutes but fuck me that felt like an hour.

The moment Hamish strummed his guitar and it rippled out the speakers the crowd erupted and started chanting “VU-KO-VI”. The love we got from the Spanish crowd filled my heart. I jumped off the guys shoulders and back on stage. We had time for 3 more songs and fuck me the pits were volatile for the rest of the set.

- Janine Shilstone

  • I really like your new song “MISTY ECSTASY,” can you give us the first idea about it?

This song is very tongue in cheek and playful. I wanted to talk about being with someone that isn’t selfish in bed and that’s the bare minimum to expect from a partner.

- Janine Shilstone

  • If you had to create a new music genre that would describe your music, what would be the name for it?

Horror sex riff pop

- Janine Shilstone
