AMMO Releases A Cold War City
The multi-faceted artist AMMO has utilized her experience as a photographer and filmmaker to better connect with audiences. A rock photographer, AMMO became very much involved in the music community by profiling bands she saw as being vital to the scene. After getting her start in fashion photography and directing music videos, AMMO would eventually produce a feature film. She then co-founded PLAG Present, a platform to promote women and LGBTQ musicians.
Dividing her time between Los Angeles and New York City music scenes, AMMO has kept busy with many projects as a musical creator in her own right. AMMO’s career as a songwriter and performer began with various musical projects including Black Flamingo, Darklands, and Tête. In addition, the band Brass Box featured AMMO as the lead vocalist and the group released the full-length LP The Cathedral in 2019.
As singer and songwriter, AMMO has spell bounded listeners with a dark and ethereal sound that shows traces of shoegaze and influences from bands such Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rudimentary Peni, Dead Can Dance, Cranes, Cocteau Twins, and Enya. Now a solo artist, AMMO continues to create music with her haunting vocals complimented with percussive rhythms and dark, atmospheric guitars. AMMO’s music often seems tailor-made for a David Lynch film soundtrack.
AMMO released the single “Rose + Crown” earlier this year. The accompanying music video was co-directed by AMMO alongside her collaborator Christopher Slater. The single’s B-side, “Total Recall” was a tribute to Adrian Borland, lead singer of influential UK post-punk band The Sound.
Her most recent release is, “A Cold War City,” from west coast label Mourning Sun Records. Ammo’s former Black Flamingo bandmate Alex Posell co-produced the song. The lyrics reflect the deep introspection that AMMO puts into her work. As AMMO herself explains, “A Cold War City” is about the very nature of consciousness.
“‘A Cold War City” is an exploration of human memory and its fickle nature. We rewrite details of experience over and over until eventually, fiction replaces our recollection. We are the authors of our own memoirs which are under constant revision," said AMMO.
