The Circle Pit is hosting a premiere of Quebec City-based sextet APES' new lyric video for “Bottom Feeder.” The song is found on the band’s second LP, Penitence, out today on Secret Swarm Records.

APES’ Penitence delivers eight ravenously heavy and dark tracks that will immerse listeners in an unmistakable sense of impending doom. Skillfully weaving through various nuances of grimness, Penitence unquestionably solidifies APES’ position as influential figures in Canadian extreme music.

Penitence was recorded by Marc-Antoine Desjardins and Raphael Malenfant at Broil Audio, mixed by Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording, and mastered by Will Putney at Graphic Nature Audio. Artwork was created by the band’s Alexandre Goulet of Goule x Design.

APES’ new video for “Bottom Feeder” arrives alongside the official release of Penitence today. Vocalist Alexandre Goulet declares,

“We're thrilled to unveil our new video for 'Bottom Feeder.' The song is atmospheric, exuding raw power and intensity as it delves into the theme of confronting the haunting echoes of past mistakes. Its ethereal riffs make it stand apart from our previous releases—yet it seamlessly ties into the overarching themes of our new album, Penitence. We're eager for listeners to immerse themselves in the darkness and energy that we've channeled into this track and bang their heads on the finale!”

Forged in the early 2010s, APES is renowned for their distinctive fusion of grindcore, black metal, and hardcore. The band was conceived with a singular purpose: to craft heavy and unapologetically relentless music, breaking down all barriers in their path. Their merciless sound, coupled with intense live performances alongside notable acts such as Full Of Hell, Cattle Decapitation, Nails, and Unearth, positioned them as an indispensable force within the Canadian extreme music scene. After releasing a series of EPs and their debut full-length album, Lightless, in 2017, APES joined forces with Translation Loss in 2022 to release Lullabies For Eternal Sleep, a widely acclaimed EP that further explores the blending of extreme genres.

My love for concert photography came from my scrolling on tumblr in my high school years, growing more after attending Warped Tour in 2012. Earning my associates degree in the arts from Cochise College in 2017, I started hunting for my next goal. I began my photojournalism journey in 2019 after working for my local newspaper taking shots of anyone and anything. I have a background of short documentaries, video interviewing and editorial shots. My friends tell me I have a plethora of band/music knowledge that I now hope to put to good use.
