Touring in support of their sixteenth(!!!) album, Chaos Horrific, Cannibal Corpse embarked on a nationwide trek alongside Norwegian black metal pioneers Mayhem, with a stop at Brooklyn Steel, bringing Canadian technical death metal band Gorguts and Colorado’s Blood Incantation along for the ride.

Cannibal Corpse played a career-spanning set with songs from 11 of their 16 albums, including crowd favorites such as “Hammer Smashed Face”, “I Cum Blood”, as well as soon to be classics from their newest album “Chaos Horrific”, “Blood Blind”, and “Summoned for Sacrifice.” Whether you were a new fan of the band, or someone who has been following their over three decade career (including an appearance in Ace Ventura), there was something for everyone in this set. Commanding the crowd like only a death metal veteran can, George “Corpsegdriner” Fisher and his “Respect the Neck” shirt had the entire venue hanging on his every word, telling the crowd to move/jump/circle pit, with concertgoers eager to oblige.

Their co-headliners for this run were (in)famous Norwegian black metal band, Mayhem, who split their set into three acts. The first act of the set covered songs from 2000 onwards, while the second act consisted of songs from their 1994 debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, while the third act covered their 1987 EP Deathcrush. Mayhem’s theatrics, led by frontman Attila Csihar added another layer to their intense performance, with a mic holder made of bones, skulls on the stage, as well as a noose, and banners that showed deceased members Dead and Euronymous, a grim reminder of of Mayhem’s turbulent early history, which was matched in atmosphere by the dim/red lighting, as well as constant fog on stage. Whether you love them, hate them, or are terrified by them, the band knows how to put on a show that goes beyond just the music.
