Down Again Release Single “Predisposed”

The post-hardcore boom in the early 2000s showed that the intensity in hardcore punk could be complemented with greater artistic expression than previously allowed within the genre. Bands could now experiment by bringing in outside influences without losing the aggression inherent in hardcore. This development in the hardcore movement proved to be successful for many bands at the time. As innovative as this movement was, can it sustain itself into the 2020s and continue to be artistically viable? San Francisco band, Down Again shows that post-punk still has a lot more life into it with their newest single, “Predisposed.”

Down Again has made no secret of how much they admire were influenced by the early 2000s post-hardcore scene. Bands such as Underoath, Thrice, Defeater, and Brand New have clearly left a mark on Down Again as their music continues the style laid down by those bands. Down Again has also expanded what post-hardcore can be by bringing in emo influences. The band’s debut album, The Devil is a Gentleman released last year was noted for adding innovations to the post-hardcore sound.

The new track is off their new EP, Bury the Bones. The album is set to drop on September 3rd. If their latest single is any indication, Down Again is set to further extend the definition of post-hardcore in Bury the Bones. Starting off melodic with lead vocalist Lenny Costa singing the lines,

Started out just as a thought,

creeping out from the corners that have never export before,

ready or not, it caught my attention,

and made its way down to my core.

When the bassline hits, Costa continues to describe the feelings of self-loathing and doubt that threaten to overtake him. The breakdown at the end of the song can be seen to mirror the vocalist’s own potential breakdown if such thought of insecurity retains their grip on his psyche.

Down Again have a potentially new hit on their hands with, “Predisposed.” The song has all the potential to be a crowd favorite. Listening to how well the band plays this song in the studio makes one want to hear it live in front of a crowd letting off their emotions in the pit.

In the meantime, before they announce any tour dates, you can hear the song yourself on streaming services Spotify and Apple Music.
