HeartSupport (August Burns Red) + Beneath the Skin (Memphis May Fire) Team Up for Even More Mental Health Initiatives
The mental health organizations HeartSupport and Beneath the Skin have announced an exclusive partnership to strengthen ties between both groups and offer more services to the community through the vehicle of music.
HeartSupport was founded by Jake Luhrs, the vocalist for August Burns Red. Luhrs formed HeartSupport as a music-based non-profit to provide mental health care to fans of metal music. By building resources between the artists and their fans, HeartSupport connects those living with mental health issues to professionally trained peers and mentors who can guide them through the journey of recovery and support.
Beneath the Skin is run by Brittany Mullins who is the wife of Matty Mullins, vocalist for Memphis May Fire. The organization promotes itself as a “transformative mentoring program dedicated to empowering individuals to embrace their true selves and navigate life's challenges with resilience and authenticity.” Beneath the Skin has a program that connects mentors with mentees to have weekly conversations for a year to foster mental health support.
This is not the first time that HeartSupport and Beneath the Skin have collaborated. Mullins was the keynote speaker at a 2019 HeartSupport gala and supported the organization by doing interviews and participating in recovery programs. With Memphis May Fire, Mullins created a t-shirt fundraiser for HeartSupport. Luhrs and Mullins view this official collaboration as a “symbiotic and organic connection.” The goal of this union is to help metal fans gain the confidence and resources to manage their mental health recovery themselves.
