IDLES Take On NYC

British rock band IDLES came to NYC for two sold-out nights at Terminal 5. They have been on a lengthy tour around the US with Brooklynites Gustaf as support, and both bands captured the crowd with a fierce focus and energy.

Gustaf's playful, eclectic sound radiated throughout the three-level venue and captivated its crowd. Singer Lydia Gammill led the charge, inciting call-and-response lyrics from her bandmates and making eye contact with her new audience to make sure they were fully immersed in the Gustaf experience. The band has been celebrating the release of their debut album Audio Drag For Ego Slobs (via Royal Mountain Records), sprinkled with flavors of Talking Heads and Television, with a fresh twist. If the warm reception from the sold-out crowd was any indication, this art-punk band is going to go far, and fast.

IDLES brought their intense, fiery dynamic to the stage - and into the crowd - injecting humor and wit throughout the set. Singer Joe Talbot shared his enthusiasm for being back on the road as well as his sincere gratefulness to be back in New York City, thanking his fans for continuing to support the band and for allowing IDLES to return to the United States in general. The band brought a fan named Cait up to sing “I'm Scum”, for which Talbot provided backing vocals, much to her excitement. The crowd was asked to take a seat during the track, which launched into a raucous dance party once the beat exploded once more. There were stories, new songs, and even a bit of a Mariah Carey cover - it's never too early for Christmas, is it? IDLES will be releasing their fourth album, Crawler, on November 12th via Partisan Records. This record quickly follows Ultra Mono, recorded and released in 2020 while the band was locked down during the pandemic.

Photographer

I am a photographer based in New York City. I primarily capture live music, though I also love documenting cities and events. I look for beauty in the details. I studied at the School of Visual Arts for two years before leaving to pursue other education and received a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies from Hunter College in 2016. I have been published in numerous outlets such as Stencil, Jersey Beat, and Alternative Press. I also had a photograph featured in a national Ernie Ball campaign. I feel most at home when I'm at a concert and have been enjoying live music since I was 8 years old - with no plans to stop any time soon.
