If this current wave of Barbimania is making you sick of all things pink, Derek Smalls is coming to your rescue with a hard-hitting song designed to melt plastic dolls. The legendary bassist of heavy metal icons Spinal Tap has released his first single in five years, “Must Crush Barbie.” The track released via Bottomland Productions / Immortal Records is seriously loud and heavy and it’s the kind of song you crank up to 11.

Derek Smalls, who bares more than a passing resemblance to comedian and The Simpsons voice actor Harry Shearer, had been away from the music business for many years and was preoccupied with other business ventures. Smalls was the celebrity spokesperson for BruegelCoin, Unfortunately, the cryptocurrency tanked, and even more unfortunately, Smalls's entire salary as spokesperson was in crypto. This left him no other choice but to return to his first love, playing music.

Been spending the last year or so as Brand Ambassador for BruegelCoin, the Dutch cryptocurrency. Since it was cratering this past spring, I was following the news more than usual, which is where I got bombarded by all the Barbie BS. I don’t know which angered me more, but it’s really hard to write a song about crypto. But the overwhelming shroud of pinkness definitely deserved a major pricking. And that’s where I came in.
— says Derek Smalls

The hit film Barbie starring Margot Robbie is critically acclaimed. Many critics have said it has serious Oscar buzz and it's been hailed as a modern feminist classic. However, Derek Smalls may have hit on what the true reason behind the film is in his lyrics where he belts out:

Zillion dollars worth of noise
All to sell some pinkish toys

Fans will get to see more of Derek Smalls when the highly anticipated sequel to the cult film This is Spinal Tap is released in March 2024. Famed documentarian, and Rob Reiner lookalike, Marty DiBergi returns to catch up with the iconic rockers forty years after the original film.
