Rebecca Black Was Here

In 2011, thirteen-year-old Rebecca Black was thrown into the music scene when her track Friday achieved infamous virality on the internet. Ten years later, she’s still present in music: now 23, openly queer, and with a fairly large audience on TikTok. Her social media journey has been interesting, but her musical journey even more so. Her latest project Rebecca Black Is Here, a 6 track EP, was released on June 16th.

Three tracks off this EP were released as singles, the first being the upbeat pop track Girlfriend, which narrates Black’s breakup with a girlfriend. With it’s incredibly catchy chorus, this song was a great choice for the lead single. The two other singles Personal and Worth It For The Feeling are a bit heavier, and show off Black’s skills as both a lyricist and a musician.

The stand-out track on this project is placed right in the middle: a hyperpop adjacent, Glitch Gum produced song called NGL. Rebecca Black has previously worked with Dylan Brady (of 100 gecs) on her hyperpop remix of Friday, and Glitch Gum has collaborated with 100 gecs as well. This song is an incredible blend of hyperpop and mainstream pop, which seems to be Rebecca Black’s niche. She has explored hyperpop previously, like when she featured on the track Edgelord, with Dorian Electra, but her own music seems to take inspiration from the genre, while also mixing in some mainstream pop elements.

If one thing is evident from this EP, it’s clear that Rebecca Black has found her own sound, and has mastered it. From being an internet punchline a decade ago to becoming a Gen Z pop icon, it seems that there’s nothing she can’t overcome. Rebecca will be heading out on her own tour this year, and hopefully releasing more music in the near future. She can only become more successful from here, and I’ll be keeping up with her on TikTok to cheer her on.
