One thing that the East Coast is known for, is its thriving local music scene. Every now and then a new band would emerge and instantly cement their spot in their local scene and that’s exactly what Sewn Away did. On August 4th, the NY/NJ hybrid newcomers released their debut single “You Wouldn’t Understand” along with a music video that premiered via BVTV and has already gathered over 15k views.

The music video, directed by Nick Libraro, starts off with a brief spoken word intro before going into the band playing the song in a warehouse. The song has a perfect blend of heaviness mixed with clean choruses that remind me of bands like A Skylit Drive, soft melodic leads in the background and hard hitting breakdowns with lyrics that will pull you in with feelings of self-isolation.

When I was writing You Wouldn’t Understand, the height of the lockdown put me in a spiral. I’ve had the tendency to go AWOL at points and disappear from my friends instead of talking out everything that was going on in my head at points…I would tend to disappear for a week (and maybe at points a month) and just figure things out for myself. Occasionally, I would go off and write, and that’s essentially how the skeleton of You Wouldn’t Understand came to be….lyrically it comes from that particular headspace I was in where I felt like I was just existing in between everything and I felt that I couldn’t relate to anyone; often I felt like I was floating along in a limbo.
— Vocalist Jed Valencia on You Wouldn’t Understand

The band itself has been in the works for some time after all the members have played in previous projects throughout the New York and New Jersey area such as Second Nature, Alive In Fiction, and Wellwisher. Sewn Away shows no signs of slowing down and I’m looking forward to hearing what they’ve got in store.

Sewn Away is:
Jed Valencia - Vocals
