The Gaslight Anthem Brings The History Books Tour to Central Park
On a perfect August evening in Central Park, The Gaslight Anthem delivered a performance that resonated deeply with their loyal fans and newcomers alike. Touring in support of their 2023 album History Books (and 2024 expanded re-release), the New Jersey rockers brought a blend of raw energy and heartfelt nostalgia.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the band took the stage to an eager crowd. The anticipation was palpable, and the moment they launched into “American Slang," the opening/title track of their third album, longtime fans released all the energy they'd built up in preparation for this moment, singing along to every word, and barely standing still for the any of the roughly hour and a half the band played. Frontman Brian Fallon, ever the charismatic storyteller, was in fine form. His voice, both gritty and melodic, carried the weight of the band’s signature tales of love, loss, and redemption. Fallon’s connection with the audience was immediate and personal, making each song feel like a shared experience rather than just a performance.
The setlist was a well-curated journey through The Gaslight Anthem’s discography, with a perfect balance of old favorites and new material. Songs from History Books such as “Positive Change" and “The Weatherman" showcased the band’s continued evolution while staying true to the sound that made them beloved. The new tracks seamlessly integrated into the set, along with covers of Billie Eilish’s ocean eyes and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit (featuring opener Pinkshift) demonstrating their ability to evolve while maintaining their core essence.
Sidenote: Brian Fallon is incorrect about the best NY pizza being in NJ. Despite this, he is still a wonderful storyteller and songwriter.
