The Kinks Release New Ray Davies Mix: “Money Talks (2023 Mix)”

Legendary British rock band The Kinks are back with a new digital single and music video. Frontman Ray Davies has produced a new mix of the group’s 1974 track “Money Talks.” The track is off The Journey Part 2 released via BMG. The original version of “Money Talks” appeared in 1974 concept album Preservation Act 2. Ray Davis mixed the new version with Matt Jaggar at Konk Studies in London. “Money Talks” is one of the band’s more obscure songs, but it remains fondly remembered by Davies who revealed the track’s dark meaning.

Moral decline. Always amused me when we did it live. An exceptional song I think.
— explained Davies

This is a view shared by other members of the band. The Kinks hadn’t played the song in years, but it still is a favorite for Davies and his bandmates.

“I have memories of playing this song on the US tours in the 70s. It’s a good old stomper for the stage.
— aid drummer Mick Avory

The Journey Part 2 follows the release last March of The Journey Part 1. Together the two volumes collect classic songs, B-sides, and singles. The Journey Part 2 includes six new Ray Davies mixes. Of the six, three are live performances from The Kinks’ 1975 performance at New Victoria Theatre in London. The live tracks were previously unreleased. The Journey Part 2 also saw the release last September of the digital single “Everybody’s a Star (Starmaker) (Live 1975, 2023 Mix).” The Journey Part 2 is available in 2CD, 2LP, Digital, and HD Digital formats. The album includes a booklet with band photos and track-by-track written commentary by band members Ray Davies, Dave Davies, and Mick Avory.

The three original members have handpicked every track on The Journey Part 2. The songs were curated to fit a theme mirroring the turbulent times The Kinks shave experienced together as a band. Other classic tracks featured on The Journey Part 2 include “Lola,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “20th Century Man,” “Dedicated Follower Of Fashion,” “Till The End Of The Day,” “A Well Respected Man,” and “See My Friends.” Tracks were taken off the albums Face To Face, The Kink Kontroversy, Something Else, The Village Green Preservation Society, Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround, Muswell Hillbillies, Everybody's In Show-Biz, Preservation Acts 1 & 2 and A Soap Opera.

The Kinks are one of the most celebrated bands of the British Invasion. The band has had numerous appearances on top 10 lists and has had four albums reach gold status. With honors ranging from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the UK Music Hall of Fame, and a knighthood for Ray Davis, The Kinks are one of the most celebrated bands to come out of Greta Britain. The fact that The Kinks continues to attract over a billion streams shows that the band can still command attention from fans of all generations.
