The Technicolors Release ‘Cinema Sublimina’
Psychedelic alt-rockers The Technicolors have just dropped their fourth album, Cinema Sublimina. The band’s signature blend of indie rock and Britpop influences are in full form in their latest release which adds additional funk and dance elements. The Technicolors have already released four singles off Cinema Sublimina, and they each represent a different aspect of the band’s sound.
The latest release is the song “DJ in Brazil”. According to frontman Brennan Smiley, the song was inspired by the band’s last tour of Brazil and his return to his Arizona homeland after an extended stay with drummer Austin Scates.
“We had just returned from being on tour in Brazil, where Austin and I had extended our trip after the shows to stay on a farm with some friends,” said Smiley. “We all ended up back in the studio two days after returning to Arizona, in hopes of capturing some of that dynamic shift between a place so vibrant and unfamiliar and the desert, where we all grew up and that sensation of being on your toes is often hard to come by.”
“DJ in Brazil” is just one of the tracks on Cinema Sublimina featuring guitarist and social media star Mateus Asato. The guitar on “DJ in Brazil” is in the bossa nova style emphasizing the Brazilian theme of the song. Asato has been making waves in the scene with his previous work with artists such as Tori Kelly, Jessie J., and Bruno Mars.
Other singles off Cinema Sublimina include the danceable “Night Visions” which utilizes a retro 80s new wave sound. The song “Howl” is a wonderful mix of soft vocals and blistering guitar. The groovy single, “Dress Up for You” utilizes electro beats and keyboards to significant effect. The mash-up of styles and moods on the singles off Cinema Sublimina hint at a greater story being told on the album.
As Smiley explains, “As a four-piece rock band, it’s been exciting to navigate the musical landscape and figure out the best way to do our thing in the most compelling way to us - and believe me, we’ve released music in just about every way you can - but I think it the idea of releasing any collection of songs with a common theme or story has actually made the idea of an ‘album’ become more valuable. Like, what’s the point of having an ‘album’ with a bunch of songs on it if they don’t mean anything together?”
Recording an album with a unifying theme was not initially planned by the band, but as Smiley explains it came organically.
“Cinema Sublimina is a blurry collage of all the moments in life that feel ‘rigged,’” said Smiley. “We never intended to make any kind of concept record but we most definitely ended up with a story arc that, to me, sort of reflects the way things feel when you walk out of a movie theater or a play… as if you just witnessed another dimension flash before your eyes. Also, the idea of a ‘concept record’ is sort of funny because growing up I’d mostly see it within progressive rock bands or Rush or something. I think once we realized there was a flow and a common theme happening, we sort of leaned into it, maybe because it feels like the way people consume music nowadays is much more single-based.”
With the release of four technically brilliant singles and the positive reactions from critics and fans they have garnered, Cinema Sublimina is destined to be a high point in the recording career of The Technicolors. The album will be released on stream via ONErpm. The Technicolors will also release Cinema Sublimina on classic vinyl.
