Witch Weather Debut Self-Titled

Hailing from Eastern Pennsylvania, Witch Weather is ready to expand beyond their region and cast a spell over the greater indie rock scene with their latest release, “Don’t Need.”

Witch Weather are a duo consisting of lead singer and guitarist Kaitlynn and bass player and vocalist Juliann. Combining elements of goth, punk, and indie rock the track, “Don’t Need” is a powerful anthem and is reflective of the unique sound of Witch Weather. Creating the song was an emotional experience for Kaitlynn.

‘Don’t Need’ was me finally figuring out how to write an angry song. Normally when I try to do it the song turns into something sad and depressing but in this case, we finally executed the way I would have liked. Especially on the album version of the track. Lyrically it’s about being fed up with being taken advantage of. Recording the guitar solo made me want to explode, it’s not hard to play by any means I just kept messing it up.

For Juliann, the creative process was liberating and opened new avenues of expression.

‘Don’t Need’ was really fulfilling for me to sing since I have been really self-conscious about my voice. I was always told I wasn’t a singer and that was the first time I felt I accomplished something vocally. Prior to this single, I pretty much only wrote and played my bass lines. I was and still am a part of songwriting decisions like song form, theme, etc. But this was the first time I performed something else on a recording which led to me doing backups on other tracks as well. It’s been a good conference booster because even though I took vocal lessons in college, and no shade to that teacher, I just still hadn’t really found my voice. and now ‘Don’t Need’ has allowed me to start that journey.

The single “Don’t Need” is off Witch Weather’s self-titled debut album that is set to be released appropriately in the witchy month of October. The tracks range in different styles and show influences from post-punk, synth-pop, shoegaze, and even hardcore.

The genesis of Witch Weather can be traced to 2013 when Kaitlynn began to write music and record song in her basement. Kaitlynn has cited bands such as Siouxsie and The Banshees, Against Me!, Fugazi, Screaming Females, and Depeche Mode as influences. Much of Kaitlynn’s lyrics deal with her experiences as a transwoman. Her songs often detail the ups and downs of her journey from confusion and closeted life to her growing acceptance and ride of her identity. Kaitlynn however writes in a style that can be appreciated by people of all gender identities as her themes of confusion and self-loathing are truly universal. Come this October there will be few people who will not be enchanted by the musical spell of Witch Weather.
