Many people remember The Cult from their hit single, “She Sells Sanctuary,” which became an 80s rock classic. Hardcore fans will know that The Cult was the third incarnation of the group which had earlier been the goth band Southern Death Cult and later Death Cult. It is exciting news that founders Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy have announced a special performance of Death Cult on October 23rd at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles.

Astbury and Duffy will play a setlist consisting of songs from The Cult’s first two albums Dreamtime (1984) and Love (1985). In addition, they will also play favorites from Southern Death Cult and Death Cult. After the Los Angeles show Asbury and Duffy will go on a U.K. tour.

Previously Asbury and Duffy had announced a series of North American dates as The Cult including an appearance at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, CA. For many of those dates, The Cult will have darkwave band Cold Cave opening for them.

The history of the band began in 1981 when Southern Death Cult was formed. Their self-titled album was released posthumously in 1983. While Southern Death Cult dissolved, the partnership between Astbury and Duffy would continue for more than 40 years. The next phase of their partnership was Death Cult which released two 12-inches, the Death Cult EP and “Gods Zoo” single, which were later combined and released as a CD. In 1984 the duo then reformed the project into the Th Cult and achieved wider success with the release of Dreamtime. The Cult would become widely popular and release 11 full-length albums and numerous international and U.S. gold and platinum certifications.
