Esprit D’Air Releases Sophomore Album ‘Oceans’

Esprit D’Air, the London-based J-rock band have released their sophomore album titled Oceans. The album, released via Starstorm Records, features guest appearances and remixes from leading figures in the rock and electronic music scenes. Goth legend Ben Christo from The Sisters of Mercy appears on the track “Dead Zone.” Ryo Kinoshita, the lead singer of Japanese metalcore band Crystal Lake, supplies vocals on “The Abyss.” The song “Souhou Liar” features Japanese producer UmiKazeTaiyou.

Oceans features no less than three versions of the song “Leviathan.” In the addition to the original studio song, Esprit D’Air invited innovative musicians in electronic music to produce remixes. English electronic musician Shirobon and Los Angeles-based duo Heavygrinder both supply different takes on “Leviathan.” Esprit D’Air also has released an appropriately cinematic, cyberpunk-themed music video, “Leviathan 2.0 (Enhanced Edition).”

The “Leviathan” remixes appear as bonus tracks on Oceans. Bonus tracks include covers of songs by classic J-rock bands X Japan and Dead End, both of whom have been cited as direct influences on Esprit D’Air by the band’s frontman Kai.

First breaking into the scene in 2013, Esprit D’Air blew people away with their style of electronic metal. Reformed in 2016 as a solo project of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Kai, Esprit D’Air has won praise from critics from Loudwire, Huffington Post, BBC Radio, Kerrang!, and Louder. In 2018, The Independent Music Awards honored Esprit D’Air with the Best Metal Album award for their debut album, Constellations. Among the judges that year were noted metal artists Slayer, Amy Lee (Evanescence), and Sepultura.

Kai is dedicated to a true DIY approach to his music. Rather than run after a major label deal, Kai would rather produce and record his albums himself. Kai goes as far as to use his own home recording studio. This has proven to be a remarkably successful method for Kai who continues to make innovative music that pushes the limits of heavy metal and electronic music.
