Ursa Minor Release Lyric Video For “Stardust”

New York-based band Ursa Minor has released a new lyric video for their song, “Stardust.” The video is appropriately cosmic in theme with stunning visuals of nebulas and stars racing by you at warped speed. The groovy guitar and vocals will give listeners the proper headspace to enjoy the trippy images that materialize on the screen.

Ursa Minor was formed in New York City in the late 90s. That era was a fertile one for the city’s music scene. Lead vocalist Michelle Casillas worked as a sound engineer at the legendary downtown club Tonic. Sadly, the club is no longer in operation, but in its heyday hosted some of the most vital music acts of the New York underground scene. Casillas was a singer on many film scores by composers Elliot Sharpe Anton Fier (Feelies, Golden Palominos) and a frequent collaborator with other musical acts. She then took the initiative to form her own band and recruited a group of talented musicians. Ursa Minor consists of guitarist Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Feist, Willie Nelson, Lounge Lizards), drummer Robert DiPietro (Elysian Fields, Norah Jones), and bassist Rob Jost (Imogen Heap, Bjork).

Silent Moving Picture, the debut LP of Ursa Minor, was released by Steve Shelly of Sonic Youth on his Smells Like Records company. The album with its heavy use of a Fender Rhodes piano was a strong debut. The sophomore album, Showface (Anthemusa), showed the band using a heavy rock sound and bigger arrangements.

For their current LP release, Sian Ka'an, Ursa Minor took inspiration from a trip to a protected biosphere reserve in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. Moved by the beauty of the land, Ursa Minor were motivated to write songs based on their sense of wonder they felt. The title of the album is Mayan for “origin of the sky.”

Sian Ka'an features great production by Tony Scherr. The album was recorded analog to Otari 8 track by Derek Neivergelt. Mark Plati, who had previously worked with David Bowie, mixed the album. Sian Ka'an features special guest musicians, violist Caleb Burhans (John Cale, Yoko Ono, Steve Reich, the National, Arcade Fire), and organist Todd Caldwell (Crosby, Stills, Nash).
