Lady Gaga Releases ‘Dawn of Chromatica’

A bit over a year after releasing her studio album Chromatica, Lady Gaga has released the follow-up remix album titled Dawn Of Chromatica. With smash hits like “Rain On Me” and “Stupid Love”, Chromatica made its mark on pop music in 2020. Dawn Of Chromatica takes the songs in a new direction,  leaning away from the typical sounds of the Billboard charts and dives into the more experimental. With features from artists like Dorian Electra and Arca, this album bridges the gap between radio pop and hyper pop.

Before getting into my thoughts on this album, I want to take a second to acknowledge SOPHIE, an innovative producer that created a space for this type of music to exist. SOPHIE tragically passed away in early 2021, but her influence is eternal. She is considered to be one of the true creators of the hyper pop genre, and this album wouldn’t have been possible without her work.

The remix album is 14 tracks long and features producers & artists all across the pop music spectrum. The original Chromatica was already phenomenal, so it’s hard to believe that there would be anything that could take those songs to the next level. However, there are several tracks on this album that I’d argue are better than the original.

911" was easily my favorite off of the original album, and its remix is probably my favorite off of Dawn of Chromatica as well. Featuring Charli XCX and A.G. Cook, two current pioneers in hyper pop, I may prefer the remix to the original. It maintains the dance element of the original while adding another layer of intensity and drive that only A.G. Cook can bring to a track. It builds more than the original, and Charli XCX always delivers with her features.

The other stand-out track from the album is the final track, the Haus Labs Version of “Babylon”. This remix was first used at a launch event for Gaga’s makeup brand Haus Laboratories, and many fans have been eagerly awaiting an official release. The original “Babylon” was already a fun track, but this remix takes it to another level. It’s a great note to end the album on, and definitely is one of my favorite remixes.

With a stacked list of features, it was impossible for this remix album to be anything but incredible. I hope Gaga continues to explore collaboration in this direction and continues to experiment with different areas of pop music.
