Olly Alexander’s Years and Years Covers Lady Gaga’s ‘The Edge of Glory’

As Lady Gaga released her latest record “Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary” on June 25th, British singer Olly Alexander from Years and Years joins the tracklist with his cover of “The Edge of Glory”. His re-envisioning of the track is glamorous, with a heavy, glimmering synth backtrack that compliments Olly’s crystalline, soprano voice. The cover does absolute justice with a bassier mix and refreshing, passionate vocals in comparison to the original Lady Gaga song. Unfortunately, no sax solo near the 3-minute mark like in the original track. Small price to pay for a masterful cover.

The album “Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary” (Released via Interscope Records) contains 5 additional cover songs to the ending half of the tracklist. Artists that have their covers featured are Orville Peck and Big Freedia, and others that are in support of the LGBT+ community, which Lady Gaga and Olly Alexander have been known to be great advocates through interviews and live performances. Not to mention, Olly’s major role in BRIT TV Series “It’s a Sin” airing back in February 2021.

The HBO Max Drama “It’s a Sin” featuring the performance of Olly Alexander, depicted a group of gay men in the HIV/AID crisis in the UK. Although the subject of HIV and AIDS had difficulty selling to broadcasters, the series received critical acclaim for its writing and performances, causing an upsurge in HIV testing and brought the conversation back to the public more than ever.

Shortly after Olly’s critically acclaimed performance, Years and Years joined forces with Australian singer, Kylie Minogue, to create a remix of Olly’s “Starstruck”. The two had previously worked together at the Royal Albert Hall, dueting Kylie’s 1990 hit “Better The Devil You Know”. Olly states the “Starstruck” Remix with Kylie, “... is quite literally a dream come true. Kylie is an icon who has inspired me since I first started making music, so this feels out of this world...I'm over the moon and the stars and the planets that this has happened!”

Olly Alexander has seen his image thrive with accomplishments and popularity in 2021. Olly began the year starring in a Critically Acclaimed HBO Series reviving light to the HIV/AIDs wave, released a new batch of tracks and remixes since 2018 that have received positive ratings, and has his cover of Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” featured on Gaga’s latest record.
