Slaughter To Prevail Release “1984”

Many metalheads will recognize the Russian deathcore band Slaughter To Prevail from lead vocalist Alex Terrible’s insanely popular YouTube channel. In addition to highlighting the band’s official videos and live performances, Terrible also does reaction videos and sings covers. With 922k subscribers, the channel attracts more than 36.5 million YouTube views and 305 million cross-platform streams. With such a high-profile platform Terrible has chosen to voice his concerns about recent world events through his music.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine motivated Alex Terrible to pen Slaughter To Prevail’s most recent single, “1984.” Here is Alex Terrible’s official statement:

"This song I wrote when war got started. I can’t stay silent about all this situation. We made a simple video clip just to say what we think about the war and wanted to post it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it didn't work out quickly. This song is not the usual. It's not like us. But this is the cry of my soul. War is always a huge tragedy for everyone. Please stop the violence and this war. I know many of you wanted to hear something different from us. But right now, we won't do it this way, and sounds like that. This is our message. I am from Russia. I love my country; I love our fans from there, and I can’t believe it goes so far from 2014. God save us all. Stay human."

The video itself is raw. The video shows the band playing in a room without special effects or a big budget. The band’s signature look involving the wearing of monster masks is the most showmanship you get in the video, but that is all you need. Terrible’s vocals, alongside his bandmates' excellent musicianship, combine to present a truly kickass metal performance.

The song title alludes to the classic dystopian sci-fi novel by George Orwell, 1984. Terrible’s lyrics make clear what he and the band think of Putin’s current regime with lyrics such as:

War

Their eyes are damned, their faith is crucified

War

Their tongue is stone, their tongue is dead

War

This son of a bitch will stick a knife in your back

Ascend, adaption

1984, 1984

This is Slaughter To Prevail’s first release since their critically acclaimed sophomore album Kostolom. That album made Revolver’s 25 Best Albums of 2021 list and had hit singles with the songs “Baba Yaga” and “Zavali Ebalo.” Slaughter To Prevail has had a strong presence in the metal scene since the band’s debut in 2017 with the album Misery Sermon. Stand-alone singles “Agony” in 2019 and “Demolisher” in 2020 showed fans that Slaughter To Prevail were further honing their skills in making hard-hitting music with catchy hooks. “1984” is no exception. Their latest single is a fine presentation of Alex Terrible’s guttural singing style and the band’s intense energy.
