Sleep/less Release “My Serenade”

Canadian pop-punk band Sleep/less dropped their single, “My Serenade” on February 25th. This is the second track released this year from the band following the debut of their song “Means to an End” last January. The melodic guitars, layered vocals, and tight drumming of “Means to an End” were greeted favorably by pop-punk fans. Those Sleep/less fans who are eager to hear from the group will certainly enjoy “My Serenade” which continues the band’s musical evolution.

The progression that we’re taking is very exciting,” said frontman Beau Turner. “It feels amazing finally finding our sound. The music that we’re making now is something we connect with.”

After taking inspiration from bands such as All Time Low, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Simple Plan, the Winnipeg-based group began to develop a sound that combined all their influences yet was all their own. When Sleep/less went on a 5-month tour of Canada with the organization “Live Different,” they grew tighter as a band. After playing to over 22,000 young people, Sleep/less were motivated to work on new music. The result was the song “Laska” released in 2020 which marked a turning point for the band for they had discovered the sound they were looking for. After “Laska” the group was motivated to write new songs.

Sleep/less have crafted their own version of pop-punk that takes equal inspiration from the greater pop music landscape as it does from the guitar-heavy world of rock. All those elements are in “My Serenade,” but what is particularly interesting about this new track are the lyrics. The following lines indicate a dark, hidden melancholy hidden among the song’s pop sensibilities.

Stop and look around
Now you know you're all alone
But then your thoughts invade and soon escape inside your bones
It's pretty clear to me that I don't know anything
And possibilities fail to be seen

Don't you hesitate she said cause I know love won't wait
And every-days the same until you see the masquerade
Don't wanna be the one to come and rain on your parade
Chasing misery has come to be my serenade

Sleep/less is currently working on more music to include on an EP to be released later this year. With “My Serenade” giving us a taste of their new sound, Sleep/less will no doubt have lots of exciting new energy to offer the pop-punk scene.
