The Happy Fits Make A Stop In NYC

Hearing your favorite song live, after months of playing it on repeat in your everyday life, is a surreal experience. It almost didn’t even happen, but let’s start from the beginning. The crowd for this show was more ready and excited than I’ve ever seen a crowd be for a band that hadn’t even stepped on stage yet. This was partly due to the amazing energy of the openers, Snarls, and M.A.G.S., that got the crowd riled up. The fans in the crowd were also the most decked out in merch I had ever seen. And again, their set had yet to begin. The members of The Happy Fits, Ross, Calvin, and Luke made it clear from the moment they stepped on stage how grateful they were to be there. The songs switched from meaningful ballads to hard rock in a matter of moments, and everyone in that crowd knew the words to each one, myself included of course. In between songs, lead singer and cellist, Calvin, told stories of when and where he wrote certain songs that gave everyone a lot of insight.

Afterward, I heard fans talking about how they didn’t even know the story behind some of these songs until tonight, and how it made them that much more meaningful. At the end of the set, where I had lost hope of hearing my favorite song, there was the loudest encore I have heard for a band. “Oh, thank god, I didn’t want it to be over yet. We’re gonna play two for you!” And with Calvin’s words, they delivered. Here is where “Too Late” was played, and it was better than I could’ve imagined. Have you ever experienced, at a concert, everything happening so fast, and then it all just slows down, and you know that one moment will be engrained in your memory forever? So clear compared to the blur of the whole night? Well, let’s just say I’m glad that they had that encore and played that song. I’m pretty sure everyone there that night experienced at least one moment they will never forget, and I’m grateful to have been there.
