The Velveteers And Their Debut Album ‘Nightmare Daydream’

The Velveteers are a hard-rocking group hailing from Boulder, Colorado. Formed in 2014 by then fifteen-year-old Demi Demitro and her fourteen-year-old cousin Baby Pottersmith, The Velveteers played the Colorado club scene for years until coming up with their signature sound that shows influences from indie rock, glam, avant-garde, and classic rock. Performers as divergent as T.Rex, Elvis Presley, Stevie Nicks, and St. Vincent are cited by the band as inspirations.

All those acts have been big influences on us,” said Demitro, “but our goal has always been to be a mix of everything. We don’t want to sound like a band from a different time. We want to sound like a band that’s right here right now—in this very moment.

Demitro grew up on stage. Her mother ran a theater company, and her father was an Elvis impersonator. She learned to play guitar and sing at an early age. She would jam any chance she could get with her cousin who picked up the drums. The duo opened for LA-based band Deep Valley who were so impressed that they took The Velveteers with them on their UK tour. At that point, Jonny Fig joined the group. In a unique twist, Fig plays drums alongside Pottersmith, in addition to various other instruments when called upon.

With their sound now expanded, The Velveteers went to work recording music and producing DIY videos. Producer Dan Auerbach caught wind of The Velveteers through clips of their explosive live performances and artistically done music videos posted online. He was greatly impressed with what he saw and heard.

I instantly dug them,” said Auerbach. “They’re amazing live, and their videos are so creative. And they just sound so powerful. Any time you doubletrack drums on a record, it’s going to sound so heavy. Then you put that together with this baritone guitar player who is so unique, and it’s so bombastic. There’s nothing like them.

After signing with Easy Eye Sound, The Velveteers went to a studio in Nashville to record their debut album Nightmare Daydream. Standout tracks on the album include “Charmer and the Snake,” “Dark Horse,” and “Motel #27.” The entire album is filled with amazing tracks filled with snarling vocals, heavy riffs, and groovy rhythms. The Velveteers are just as apt to perform haunting melodies with ethereal vocals as they are blasting eardrums with their individual style of hard rock.

We don’t have any preconceived notions of what we sound like,” said Demitro. “It’s not like we’re a rock band so we have to do what a rock band does. We want to try things we’ve never tried before. We want to go off in directions that we might not have ever considered. At heart, we’re just a band trying to make the best music we can, whatever that sounds like.
