Waterparks and the "Greatest Hits" Album

Waterparks has been one of my favorite bands for the past 6 years or so. I’ve watched them release their first full-length album, and I’ve seen them grow from that. In 2021, their album Greatest Hits was released, paired with the “A Night Out on Earth” tour - which I, of course, attended.

Greatest Hits is much different from Waterparks’ earlier work; it combines more genres than their standard pop-punk origins. There are influences of hip-hop, lo-fi, and of course their typical alternative rock and pop-punk sound. Songs like “See You In The Future” are fast-paced lyrically, clashing with harsh rhythms and making for one of the best show-closing and album-closing songs I’ve heard.

Though I’m a huge fan of Waterparks’ older works on EPs Airplane Conversations and Blacklight, this album gave me new favorites from their discography. Singer Awsten Knight’s vocals on “Fuzzy”, paired with how funky and driven the song is, makes for a catchy tune that is honestly one of my all-time favorite songs now. “Numb” was an experience to listen to, both over streaming services and live on their tour, filled with emotion in both the vocals and the music; guitarist Geoff Wiggington and drummer Otto Wood are show-stopping performers on their own and combined together as a whole band, they’re more powerful than ever on this album. A slower song but still packing a punch with emotion and intense musicality, “Magnetic” is a perfect song that showcases how Waterparks can master any combination of genres - and that their production is top-notch.

With the UK tour and upcoming surprises from the band, Waterparks continues to grow in popularity, and in my heart, thanks to Greatest Hits. It’s an album that mixes so many genres and so many eras of the band’s sound, making for a great listening experience.
