Clairo Releases New Single “Blouse”
On June 11th, 22-year-old singer-songwriter Clairo released her first single from her upcoming album: a vulnerable, raw track titled Blouse. Her second album Sling, co-produced with Jack Antonoff, will be released on July 16th. The album was announced after her performance of Blouse on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and is an eagerly anticipated project following the success of her debut album Immunity.
Always a storyteller, Clairo narrates a one-sided relationship on the acoustic leading single Blouse. The lyrics read almost like a diary entry, and her gentle vocals are almost as vulnerable as the lyrics. It feels almost like a Phoebe Bridgers track, which is a bit of a new direction for Clairo. While no stranger to melancholy lyricism, her music tends to be a bit more upbeat. If this song is a signifier of the overall style of this album, it'll be great to see how she has evolved musically.
Instrumentally, the track consists of just guitar and other various strings. Nearly all of Clairo’s previous songs have some sort of percussive element to them, so this is definitely a change of pace. After working with Taylor Swift on folklore and evermore, I wonder if Jack Antonoff is taking Clairo’s music in a similar direction of scaled-back production and slower tempos. Blouse is a great track, and if the entirety of Sling is similar to it, I definitely wouldn’t complain. It’s exciting to see Clairo exploring a bit more with her music, and also collaborating with other great musicians like Jack Antonoff.
Clairo’s sophomore album Sling will be released worldwide on July 16th, and Blouse is currently out everywhere now.
